Chief Selector Wahab Riaz introduced the 18-member Pakistan Test squad for the impending tour to Australia, marking his initial assignment since taking charge of the national men’s selection committee last week. The eagerly awaited three-match series is set to run from December 14, 2023, to January 7, 2024.
However, the squad has sparked curiosity due to the absence of the dynamic pace bowler, Haris Rauf. Wahab addressed this exclusion in a press conference, highlighting Rauf’s choice to pull out from the tour due to concerns regarding workload management.
Wahab stressed Haris Rauf’s significance as an impact player in Test cricket and highlighted the necessity of leveraging his talents in this format. He mentioned that initially, an agreement was reached with Rauf, expecting him to bowl 10 to 12 overs per day. However, Rauf didn’t agree with this arrangement despite having recently bowled in one-day cricket.
“He’s a game-changer, and it’s crucial to utilize him in Test cricket. Our request was for him to bowl 10 to 12 overs a day, considering his recent performances in one-day cricket. The challenge is the absence of our 140+ pace bowlers due to fitness issues. As a player, sometimes you need to make sacrifices and prioritize playing for Pakistan rather than stepping back,” Wahab explained.
Rauf’s last Test match for Pakistan was against England in December 2022 in England.
